CrikeyCon VIII [2022]
Creating the key art and collateral for CrikeyCon VIII, a cybersecurity convention held in Brisbane, Australia.
Vectors, Affinity Design
I had the opportunity to create graphics for a cyber security convention called CrikeyCon held (mostly) annually in Brisbane, Queensland. CrikeyCon is a one-day volunteer-led cyber security convention jam packed full of things to check out, including talks, workshops, capture the flag challenges and overall good vibes. If you're curious or interested in cybersecurity, you can check out the talks from the day on CrikeyCon's Youtube, and check out an archived version of the website from 2022 here.
I helped out the CrikeyCon crew previously with more graphic design work, but this year I created the key illustration and various collateral for the event (posters, merch, promos etc)n. I'm very grateful to the CrikeyCon team for trusting me with Droppy and their patience as I worked through this project.
Bringing Droppy to the Big Top
This was the first CrikeyCon held at their new home at the RNA showgrounds in Brisbane, Queensland. It is known for hosting events such as the annual show, so the crew wanted to integrate a carnival theme. What eventuated was CrikeyCon's main mascot 'Droppy' taking on a ring leader persona for this year.
I tried to keep things simple but visually differentiate from previous years. Besides a new theme each year, the colours and style are generally quite different. This was also my first real rodeo using Affinity Designer after using Illustrator for many, many years.

I created and shared sketches of what Droppy would look like in other stereotypical circus roles (like a ‘freak show’) but with an infosec spin. The crew liked them enough that I also made vectors for them.

Along with static graphics I made some basic animations for Powerpoint slides and such. While simple, this was my first go at using OpenToonz after using the Adobe suite for so long. OpenToonz is an amazing program besides some of the quirks. Pro tip - save frequently. Crashes happen.
The Convention
I had a great time at the convention itself, the new venue was truly next level. Here's a couple of photos from the convention.

Allen showcased his Excel skills to bring Droppy to the sheets. As always, his talk was amazing.

A preview of the main stage during setup. The lighting was great!

The team made a Droppy commemorative coin and surprised me with one on stage during the closing ceremony. I love and treasure it.

There were some choice prizes up for grabs for the CTF. Also some really interesting demonstrations for car hacking.

There happened to be a maker's market going on across the road for lunch. Good to see Droppy there too!
